Nili-Ravi Buffalo: Breed Guide, Milk and Care

Nili-Ravi buffalo breed guide: origin, white markings and wall eyes, typical milk and fat ranges, feeding, cooling, breeding and choosing a good buffalo.

Quick answer

The Nili-Ravi is a riverine dairy buffalo from the Punjab, named after the Sutlej and Ravi rivers. It is black with white markings on the face, legs and tail, often has wall eyes, and is known for high milk yields with rich, high-fat milk. Yields vary hugely with feeding and management. Nili-Ravi buffaloes do best with plenty of green fodder, a balanced ration, clean water and a way to cool off in the heat, such as a wallow, showers or sprinklers.

Origin

The breed's home tract is the land between the Sutlej and Ravi rivers in the old undivided Punjab, now mostly in Pakistani Punjab with smaller numbers across the border in India. "Nili" is said to come from the blue water of the Sutlej. Nili and Ravi were once described as two separate types and were later combined into one breed. Today the Nili-Ravi is one of the most important dairy buffaloes in Pakistan, and its animals and semen have gone to several other countries in Asia and South America.

Appearance

  • Colour: usually black, sometimes brown
  • White markings: on the forehead, face and muzzle, the lower legs and the tail switch. Buyers often look for animals with white on all five "points" (forehead and four legs), though marking patterns vary.
  • Eyes: wall eyes are a classic breed feature, giving a whitish or pale look to the eye
  • Horns: small and tightly coiled
  • Build: large, deep body with a well-developed udder in good females

Published adult weights vary a lot between sources, from roughly 450 kg (about 1,000 lb) to 600 kg (1,320 lb) or more, with males heavier than females. Real animals vary widely with line and feeding.

Milk yield and quality

How much a Nili-Ravi gives depends on management more than almost anything else.

  • Recorded herds: averages in published data are often in the region of 1,800 to 2,000 kg (about 4,000 to 4,400 lb) per lactation, with lactations commonly around 10 months.
  • Good farms with strong feeding: noticeably higher, and elite buffaloes far higher.
  • Low-input village conditions: often well below what the breed can do, because of limited feed, heat stress and long gaps between calvings.

The milk is rich. Fat is commonly reported at about 6.5 to 7%, well above typical cow milk, so buffalo milk is in high demand for yoghurt, butter, ghee, cream and sweets.

Don't rely on a seller's daily figure. Ask for milk records, or milk the buffalo yourself, morning and evening, on more than one day before you buy.

Strengths

Nili-Ravi buffaloes turn coarse fodder and crop residues into rich milk well. They're generally docile and used to being handled. Good females can stay productive over many lactations, and male calves are raised for meat.

Limitations

Heat stress. Buffaloes have dark skin that absorbs heat and fewer sweat glands than cattle, so they struggle in direct sun. Without water to wallow in or regular showering, milk yield and fertility drop.

Breeding challenges. Buffaloes often show weak or "silent" heat, which is easy to miss. Many also stop cycling in the hottest months (summer anoestrus), especially when feed is short, so calving intervals can stretch out.

Slower to mature than many dairy cattle, and pregnancy lasts longer, roughly 10 months.

Genuine stock is limited. Typical, well-recorded Nili-Ravi animals, especially proven bulls, are less common than "Nili-Ravi type" buffaloes, so check records.

Housing and cooling

  • Shade over resting and feeding areas, with a high, airy roof
  • Water for cooling: a clean pond or wallow, or showers or sprinklers several times a day in summer, plus fans in sheds where possible
  • Clean water to drink at all times; buffaloes drink a lot, especially when milking in hot weather
  • Dry, non-slip floors with good drainage, as wet, dirty floors raise the risk of mastitis and foot problems
  • Enough space to lie down comfortably and reach feed without fighting

Wallowing ponds need to be kept reasonably clean. Stagnant, filthy water can spread infection, including to the udder.

Feeding

Milk comes from feed. A practical ration includes:

  • Green fodder by season: berseem, lucerne, oats, maize, sorghum, mott or Napier grass
  • Dry roughage: wheat straw or hay to keep the rumen working
  • Silage to bridge the gaps between fodder seasons
  • Concentrate fed according to milk yield and body condition, such as cottonseed cake, bran and grain or a commercial dairy feed; ask a vet or nutritionist to balance it
  • Mineral mixture and salt, which help milk production and fertility
  • Gradual feed changes, to avoid digestive upsets

Late-pregnant and freshly calved buffaloes need special attention. Ask your vet about feeding around calving to reduce problems such as milk fever.

Health and breeding

  • Vaccination: follow your vet's schedule; in Pakistan this commonly includes haemorrhagic septicaemia and foot-and-mouth disease, among others
  • Mastitis: clean milking, a clean udder before and after milking, and daily checks for hard, hot quarters or clots in the milk; see Mastitis in Dairy Cows, as the same principles apply to buffaloes
  • Worms and ticks: control as your vet advises, especially in calves
  • Heat detection: watch carefully, morning and evening, for subtle signs such as mucus discharge, restlessness, frequent urination and bellowing; teaser bulls or a vet's help can make breeding more reliable
  • Calves: colostrum early and a clean, dry pen; buffalo calves can be delicate in the first weeks; see Newborn Calf Care

How to choose a good Nili-Ravi

Check What you want
Breed type Black coat, white markings on face, legs and tail, wall eyes, small coiled horns
Udder Large but well attached, soft after milking, four even teats, milk veins prominent
Milk Records, or milked in front of you more than once
Health Alert, eating and cudding, clear eyes, normal dung, sound feet
Fertility Regular calving history; ask about the gap between calvings
Age Teeth consistent with the age claimed
Records Parentage, vaccinations, calving dates and service records

In Pakistan

Pakistan is the Nili-Ravi's homeland, and buffaloes produce a large share of the country's milk. Government livestock farms and research stations in Punjab keep recorded herds and supply semen from tested bulls. Good milking Nili-Ravi buffaloes command premium prices, and a lot of animals sold as Nili-Ravi are crossbreds or "type" animals, so records and a milking test matter. In the summer heat of Punjab and Sindh, access to a wallow or regular showering makes a real difference to milk and fertility.

Frequently asked questions

How much milk does a Nili-Ravi buffalo give?

It depends heavily on feeding, management and genetics. Published averages for recorded herds are often around 1,800 to 2,000 kg (roughly 4,000 to 4,400 lb) per lactation, and good buffaloes on well-run farms give considerably more. Village yields are often lower. Treat any single figure as a rough guide and ask for records.

How can I tell a Nili-Ravi from a Murrah?

Both are black riverine dairy buffaloes with curled horns. Nili-Ravi animals typically have white markings on the forehead, face, muzzle, legs and tail switch, and often wall eyes (whitish or light-coloured eyes). Murrah buffaloes are usually jet black with very tightly coiled horns and few or no white markings.

How long is a buffalo pregnant?

River buffaloes such as the Nili-Ravi are pregnant for roughly 10 months, commonly cited as about 305 to 320 days. That is several weeks longer than a cow.

Why is buffalo milk richer than cow milk?

Buffalo milk naturally contains more fat and total solids than most cow milk. Nili-Ravi milk is commonly reported at around 6.5 to 7% fat, which is why it is prized for yoghurt, butter, ghee and sweets.
